The SEED Index can be used by any organisation to measure and report on biodiversity impacts.

The index reflects the biocomplexity of ecosystems relative to their natural state. A rating of 1 means the ecosystem is in a natural state. A rating of 0 is equivalent to a completely degraded ecosystem with no biological complexity. The closer a site is to 1, the more regenerative and resilient it is likely to be.

The SEED Index beta version is under active development and is currently being used across several large-scale pilot projects.

Current Pilots

Government of Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s pioneering payments for ecosystem services program has been implemented for more than 20 years, promoting nature-positive land practices.

SEED is monitoring biodiversity in areas covered by the program to assess its effectiveness.

African Parks

African Parks conducts regular research and monitoring of natural landscapes to enhance nature-positive wildlife and habitat management.

SEED is providing African Parks with an analysis across their sites, comparing the SEED Index with ground-truth data sets, field surveys and ecological assessments so that both parties can refine their approaches.
